The Drawing Tree. Today I talk to DLeeo. We discussed her introduction into the world of Art as she drew in the tree in her backyard. She makes beautiful watercolor and oil paintings as well as some political cartoons for a private buyer. She has a blog and uses Tellgram to show most of her work and she is @DLeeo on Twitter.

In Regards to This Morning's Minor Outage

I take this very seriously. When I launched the site a year ago I made a “Tellgram is down” page just incase anything went wrong. I have never had to use it until today. The issue we had this morning has been identified as a problem with our hosting provider. I have begun monitoring the server more actively and I will do whatever it is I can to make sure our downtime is minimized in the future.

My friend Dleeo and her husband are in the middle of this disastrous flood that has hit Pennsylvania. Luckily, they live on the mountain and are safe, but their town is not. Dleeo took a photo of her husband standing in knee-deep water and posted it to Twitter. Not long after she posted that photo, she published a wire of her painting based on the photo. I would like to thank Dleeo for her support of Tellgram and I wish her and her family the best of luck. Stay dry!

Android and webOS Support

Today Tellgram supports Android and webOS phones.

Interesting notes:

Android phones do not support some unicode characters.
webOS phones do not support common HTML5 audio and video elements.

Better: iPhone, Invite Codes, and Error Logging

When I started work on Tellgram, I designed the iPhone view first. Now the iPhone side of the website has got an update to make it easier on your fingers. The columns are now collapsable so that you are not overloaded with content.

We have also made one-click invite code links. So instead of having to type in a code, you can just click a link like: tellgr.am/i/code here

Also, now every error page is logged so that we can figure out what went wrong and fix it. Things are looking good!

Video, Invite Codes, and Admission

Today we are proud to announce that we have a solution for the video problem on Tellgram. We are using the Flowplayer for browsers that do not support HTML5. There may still be some bugs, but we are working them out.

When new users log in they do not have the ability to post. They can only star things and input an e-mail address. Now when they click on Settings they are presented with the option to input a code. Tellgram administrators can now generate codes to give to people. These codes will activate your account so that you are a regular user that can post.

Also new is something you cannot see. It is a graphical front end to administrating and moderating the site.

The Goals of This Private Beta of Tellgram

Tellgram is an amazing project with ambitious goals. We want to be a gallery of your best work of most mediums. A community of people who do great things. We’re in a private beta now with 16 users who have full access. We want to open up to more people but we also want to solve some glaring issues.

This site is made to use HTML5 technologies such as audio and video embedding. The issue here is that the format we want to use for audio is not supported by some browsers. MP3 has been the dominant standard for audio on the internet for a decade. Safari, Chrome and Internet Explorer 9 are the only browsers who allow you to use this format with HTML5 audio. Firefox and Opera want us to use an alien file format called Ogg Vorbis. The issue is that practically nobody uses Ogg Vorbis. Tellgram has solved this problem by using the Flash powered Flowplayer for audio.

Our next issue is that the video format commonly used for web videos and podcasts is H.264. Currently, that format is only supported in Safari and Internet Explorer 9. While Chrome originally supported H.264 they removed it in a recent update in favor of their own, rarely used format. Like with audio, the solution was to Flash as a fallback for browsers which do not support commonly used video formats. Unfortunately although Flash does support H.264 it did not support all the videos that we threw at it in our tests. We don’t want to release a half-baked solution that won’t work with all files that users might upload, so a fix for videos is still being finalized.

Once we can ensure a consistent user experience among multiple platforms we will open up to a wider audience. Thanks to everyone for your support.

Introducing Video Wires

You can now upload mp4/h.264 video files to Tellgram! Tellgram now supports all the kinds of wires we have initially planned. Video, like audio, is done in HTML5 so it will work on the iPhone and iPad. Videos currently only play in Safari. We are looking into the best way to make it work with other browsers without having to make multiple files or use Flash.

Tip: As with audio, the RSS feeds on Tellgram can be subscribed to in iTunes and they will automatically down the new audio and video wires as a podcast.

Introducing Audio Wires

With this update you can now post small mp3 files of really cool things you made. In a band? Come on in! Do a podcast? You may already be approved! Make neat sound effect thingies? We want you!

It is HTML5 audio only. Works on the iPhone. If we need to make a fall-back for browsers that do not support MP3 files, we will. (You’d be surprised what browsers don’t support MP3 playback…)

Tip: All of the Tellgram RSS feeds can now be subscribed to in iTunes as a podcast!

Tellgram within Twitter

When Twitter announced the new website last year the big new feature was the ability to preview pictures and videos within the timeline. It started out limited to a number of content providers. Thanks to the great people at Embedly, we have an extension for your web browser called Parrotfish. What Parrotfish does is allow Twitter to show you a preview of almost any link in a tweet. They have an API for doing this properly that we don’t currently use. Why? Because the people at Embedly are so good that they already support Tellgram! I highly recommend you check out their browser extension.

Welcome to the Tellgram beta!

Tellgram is a community of creators who craft well designed content and want to share it with people. Tellgram is not for everything though. We are not Tumblr, Flickr, YouTube, Twitter, or anything like that. We are for the best of what you make.

Creative Limitations

You are limited to sending five wires a week. (No, these are not like rollover minutes.) It is our way of asking you to think to yourself, “Is this awesome?”.

Quality and Mobile

Our website is available in a high quality web app for the iPhone and iPad. We ask that you upload images that are at a minimum of 400 pixels by 400 pixels so that they look great on the iPhone 4’s retina display.

Short URLs Built In!

We bought the domain http://tellgr.am for your benefit! For example, if your username on Twitter is ZicklePop, then your profile on Tellgram has a short URL of http://tellgr.am/u/ZicklePop. Don’t worry about remembering this. If you copy your profile link from the site it will be in short url form automatically. The same with the permalink for your wires.
